Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-quality bus-based transit system that delivers fast, comfortable and cost effective urban mobility through the provision of segregated right-of-way infrastructure, rapid and frequent operations.
The system allows a high level of predictability of journey time compared to the conventional buses. It normally runs on an off-board fare collection system with platform-level boarding (which reduces boarding and alighting delays).
The transit system also utilises high-capacity buses with prominent brands, quality stations, and more importantly, it allows priority on intersections. This system is highly comfortable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective to commuters.
The BRT system has been found to mirror the performance and amenity characteristics of a modern rail transit system. It also costs four to 20 times less than trams or LRT system and 10 to 100 times less than metro systems.
Planet Projects Limited has been in the forefront of the promotion of Bus Rapid Transit in African cities, having worked on the premier BRT project in Africa – The Lagos BRT Lite and the Oshodi-Abule-Egba Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, which is currently under construction.
