Public transportation in Akure, Ondo State Capital, had been predominantly by a large fleet of taxis, with no supporting infrastructure. Traffic congestion was the order of the day and commuters were exposed to the bad elements.
The Akure Bus Shelter and Terminal Project, therefore, sought to introduce infrastructure for passenger comfort and protection and also to ensure that transport activities (boarding and alignment) take place in lay-bys without impeding traffic flow.
Consequently, Planet Projects Limited developed the concept: Engineering designs, constructed 29 bus shelters, two mini terminals and signalised three junctions. The project was concluded in 2011.
